The Friendswood planting calendar
Every window below is a real calendar date recommended for this county — not a generic frost-date offset. Green is the spring window, amber is the fall window, and the dark line under a bar is the sweet spot inside it. The red line is today.
Blue dotted lines mark the average last spring freeze () and average first fall freeze () for Galveston County. Tap any crop name for the full entry.
What can I put in the ground this week?
Fall planting calculator
Work backwards from the first freeze. The rule extension services use: days to maturity, plus two weeks of harvest, plus a two-week "fall factor" because plants slow down as the days shorten.
Crop file
Windows, spacing, depth, days to harvest, the varieties Galveston County actually recommends, and the local catch for each one.
Pests & trouble
The ones that actually show up on the upper Gulf Coast, in the order you'll meet them.

The year, month by month
Written for this coast — where January is a planting month and July is mostly survival.

The recipe box
Forty recipes, each tied to what it uses. Pick an ingredient and it shows only what that crop is good for.
Cut list & board feet
Add the parts, get board feet and a price. Hardwood is sold by the board foot, and the yard charges you for the rough thickness even after surfacing — this accounts for that.

How much will it move?
Seasonal wood movement across the grain, using the USDA Wood Handbook dimensional-change coefficients. This is the calculation that decides whether a breadboard end splits your tabletop. Friendswood's humidity swing is wide, so it matters here.
Wood species
Sort by any column. Janka is the dent-resistance number — red oak at 1220 is the yardstick everything else gets compared to. These are The Wood Database's figures; USDA-derived flooring charts run a few points different for some species.
| Species | Janka | Weight | Cost | Working it |
|---|
Joinery
Ranked weakest to strongest. Difficulty is out of five.
Finishes
Including which ones are actually food safe — most of them, once cured.
Pilot & clearance holes
Hardwood pilots are bigger than softwood pilots. Softwood compresses around the threads; hardwood splits instead.

Keeping your place
This app is one file. It runs with no internet, no account and no sign-in, and nothing you tick is sent anywhere. That also means it needs you to tell it when to remember.
Your frost dates
Galveston County Extension prints 15 February and 17 December for the county. Houston Hobby, fifteen miles up the road, runs 8 February and 20 December; Bush Intercontinental, twenty-five miles inland, runs 1 March and 30 November. Friendswood sits closest to Hobby. Change them if your yard says otherwise — the whole calendar follows.
