We’ve been doing some serious decluttering in our house lately, and it all started with getting new carpet. The process was straightforward but transformative: we moved everything out of the rooms and into the garage, and then we made a decision—only the things we truly wanted to keep, the things we wanted to be part of our lives moving forward, would be allowed back inside.
It’s been a journey, and along the way, we’ve parted with quite a few items. But instead of selling them or donating them to strangers, something unexpected has happened: we’ve been giving them to people we care about, and that has made all the difference.
The Joy of Seeing Things Find New Homes
One of the first things to go was a love seat we’d had for years. It went to a friend who was thrilled to have it. Then there was a wicker patio set that never actually made its way to our deck; it went to my sister-in-law, where it’s now being put to good use. Pillows, blankets, and art supplies went to a cousin who was delighted to have them. A couple of chairs found their way to another sister-in-law.
Even though we could have sold these items or donated them anonymously, there’s something uniquely satisfying about giving them to people we know and care about. These aren’t just objects—they’re pieces of our lives, and seeing them continue to “live on” in new homes brings us a surprising amount of happiness.
Why It Feels Better to Give
There’s a distinct difference between getting rid of something by throwing it away or selling it and giving it to someone who will truly appreciate it.
- The Items Have a Story
Many of the things we’ve given away hold memories for us—like the tall, nine-foot Christmas tree we once had. It was unlit and way too much work for us to manage, so we gave it to my brother-in-law, who has a home with a high ceiling. Every year when we visit for Christmas, we see that tree beautifully decorated and being used in a way we never could have managed. It’s a joy to know that something we once loved is now bringing joy to someone else. - It’s About Connection
When you give something away to someone you know, it strengthens your connection with them. It’s as though the item becomes a small bond between you—a shared piece of your history that continues to exist in their life. - It’s Better Than the Trash Bin
Throwing something away can feel wasteful, especially if the item is still in good condition. By giving it to someone who will use and appreciate it, you’re ensuring it has a new life and purpose. - The Joy is Multiplied
Not only do you feel good about letting the item go, but you also get the added happiness of seeing someone else enjoy it. It’s a win-win situation that feels more meaningful than simply selling it or dropping it off at a donation center.
The Philosophy of Letting Go
This process has taught me that letting go of things isn’t just about decluttering or creating more space—it’s about being intentional with what we keep and where the rest goes. By giving things away to people we care about, we’re ensuring that those items continue to have a purpose. It feels less like saying goodbye and more like passing the torch.
What’s more, it’s made the process of decluttering much easier. Knowing that the things we’re letting go of will be appreciated by someone else takes away the guilt or hesitation we might feel about parting with them.
The Takeaway
Why do we prefer to give things away rather than sell them or throw them out? It’s simple: because we care. These items aren’t just things—they’re tied to memories, to moments in our lives. When we pass them on to people we care about, it’s like giving those memories a chance to keep going.
So as we continue to go through our home, making decisions about what stays and what goes, I’ve realized something important: decluttering isn’t just about clearing space—it’s about sharing joy, connecting with others, and finding happiness in letting go. And that’s a process I’m excited to continue.
